Have a
battery bank when you have an off-grid solar power system. In addition to
adding a battery bank to their grid-connected systems, an increasing number of
users are doing so. Particularly if you want to avoid the consequences of load
shedding or if you want to utilize your batteries to save even more money on
your energy bill by applying a particular time of use application to your
electricity supply.
Although you
may believe that being the owner of a battery bank automatically makes you the
battery bank manager, this is not the case. Fortunately, battery makers had the
forethought to eliminate the need for users to manage their batteries by
developing the Battery Management System (BMS).
Lithium Battery management systems are required to monitor the battery's level of charge and to assure the safety of its operation when lithium-ion batteries are utilised for solar energy storage. The BMS's responsibilities include the following:
- Allow for the safe charging and draining of lithium-ion batteries to be accomplished.
- To improve operational performance and cell life,
- Forecasting throughput and capacity attenuation in the face of shifting battery conditions is difficult.
- Providing improved measurements and maintenance information on the state of health (SoH).
It is possible to estimate a lithium-ion
battery's state of health (SOH) in order to
provide a qualitative assessment of the battery's capacity to store and
distribute energy in a system.
How does it work?
A battery
management system (BMS) is an electronic system that manages a
rechargeable battery (cell or battery pack). It prevents the battery from
operating outside of its safe operating area, monitors its state, calculates
secondary data, reports that data, controls its environment, authenticates it,
and/or balances it, among other things.
A smart
battery pack is a battery pack that has been constructed in conjunction with a
battery management system that has an external communication data link. An intelligent
battery pack can only be charged by an intelligent battery charger, which is
not included by lithium-ion battery suppliers in Canada.
What are the benefits of lithium-ion
batteries, exactly?
Lithium-ion
batteries have the advantage of being able to be recharged hundreds of times
and being more stable. Their energy density, voltage capacity, and
self-discharge rate are all greater than those of conventional rechargeable
batteries, indicating that they are more efficient.
